Kerner is a white grape that was developed in Germany in 1929 by crossing Schiava, a red grape, with Riesling. The Abbazia di Novacella is a monastery founded in 1142 and has been making wine for the intervening centuries. The high altitude vineyards in the Valle Isarco provide an excellent habitat for white wine grapes. This is a truly exceptional rendition of Kerner. It has a combination of depth, texture and complexity that informs the potential of its rather unknown grape. It has an exotic nose of apple, pineapple, lemon and guava fruits backed by hints of honey, linden flower and fresh herbs. On the palate, the layers of citrus peel and tropical fruit are backed by hints of honey, cream, and herbs. This lovely range of fruits, flowers and more is underlain by a rich texture and a finish that lingers and entices. If you have not tried Kerner, be aware that the 2023 Abbazia di Novacella Kerner will raise your expectation for life.
