In the hierarchy of the Spanish classification of wine growing areas, a Pago is at the top. Pago is a single estate that produces exceptional wines according to the Spanish authorities. La Casona is their mid-level wine, which seriously over delivers for the price. A marvelous well-balanced blend of Tempranillo (75%) and Merlot, it is rich without being heavy. The Merlot adds an attractive earthy funkiness without dominating the wine. Suave and succulent, it would be a good choice with hefty beef this winter.
