Black Ankle Vineyards, Frederick County (Maryland) Syrah “Phyllite” 2020 ($74)

Few winemakers have tried to make a serious Syrah on the East Coast, and fewer have succeeded. Ed Boyce and Sarah O’Herron have done that quite well with this red that could be from the upper Rhône – dark, earthy, red-berry flavors with lots of cask notes, a very savory finish and lip-smacking tannins.
