Unlike many of the Maremma Tuscan IGTs clustered around Bolgheri, the Caiarossa estate is located in the hills farther north along the coast where its three vineyards are sited at different altitudes and with different aspects. The estate wine is a combination of about a quarter each of Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Merlot with lesser amounts of other French varieties and is a very enticing blend of fruits – mainly red but also blackberries – and savory notes of dried herbs and bar bitters with dusty tannins. It also lingers on the palate, which is a plus for me, as I love heavily savory reds.
