With prices of fine Burgundy seemingly rising every vintage, it’s refreshing to find wines of this quality still available at relatively affordable levels. Côte de Nuits-Villages is an oft-overlooked appellation that comprises five villages, including Brochon, just north of Gevrey-Chambertin. Pernot Père & Fils was established in 1900 in Brochon and owns several hectares including on old-vine plot in the La Croix Violette vineyard. The 2023 Côte de Nuits-Villages reflects the quality of the fruit and the skill of the winemaker. Ripe red cherry and raspberry fruit aromas are enhanced by elegant floral, herb and baking spice tones. The flavors are vivid and spicy with the pure red fruits followed by floral, earthy, herb and baking spice elements. It is layered and lively on the palate with surprising depth and nuance. Burgundian Pinot Noir is memorable because it balances pure fruit character with breadth and depth. This is a great buy in today’s Burgundy market.
