Northern Italy winemakers have been producing Champagne-style sparkling wine for years, but only in recent times has much of it been finding its way to the American market – and it almost always is quite enjoyable. The Alta Langa region near Alba in the Piedmont designation was officially recognized in 2002, became a DOCG in 2011, and currently has about 50 producers in the consortium. This delightful bubbly is from 100% Pinot Noir and has great effervescent intensity and length on the palate, striking a balance between fruitiness – mainly citrus and candied fruit in the finish – and minerality.
