Lagrein is a bit of a weird bird varietal in that at times is can taste like a red fruit/black fruit wine from Bordeaux while at other times it has a wild fruitiness that is a taste all its own. At times, it reminds me a bit of the French-American hybrid, Chambourcin, or a Pinotage. Here, it is more of the latter, with gamey and intense elderberry and plummy fruitiness, a medium-weight body and slightly bitter tannins with a tart finish.
