Marquette is the name of a red hybrid grown on their 15 acre vineyard by Cindy and Roger Grossman. One of 8 hybrids they selected because it can ripen in an ultra short (90 days on average) growing season in Central Oregon, it was highly recommended by the University of Minnesota. Marquette, I learned, is actually a cross between two hybrids, MN 1094 and Ravat 262. Whatever its parentage, the 2017 is impressively dark in color and displays lively berry and cranberry aromas. Medium bodied, it also offers fruit driven flavors. Balanced overall, it finishes long and had me thinking of a good Gamay. Turns out, there’s some Pinot Noir in its DNA. The winery and beautiful grounds are located a short drive from Bend.
