Fowles, Victoria (Australia) Riesling “Ladies Who Shoot Their Lunch” 2023 ($35)

Australia’s Eden Valley and Clare Valley regions are getting nearly as much acclaim for their Rieslings as they do for their Shiraz, but they aren’t the only regions on the continent that are producing fine Riesling. This example comes from Victoria’s Strathbogie Ranges, where arid climate and old granite soils offer another possibility. This example is beautifully bone dry, and more delicate than Eden or Clare examples, making it very attractive in its youth. Lemon, lime and a slight hint of petrol on the nose lead to a citrus-driven palate that’s bright but rounded off, and a zesty finish wraps things up. If this isn’t being marketed in the hunting regions of the US, someone should swoop in and do so immediately, along with an excellent Pinot Noir under the same branding.
