South Africa’s third most planted red variety, Pinotage, is experiencing a renaissance. This 2018 Reserve Pinotage is from Nondumiso Pikashe, who runs Ses’Fikile Wines, an indigenous brand based outside of Cape Town. Ses’Fikile is an IsiXhosa word meaning “we have arrived,” reflecting Nondumiso’s constant awareness that Black women such as herself have been excluded from the world of wine in South Africa for far too long. Her Pinotage bursts with blackberry sauce, plum, and boysenberry that carry through to the palate alongside well-integrated tannins and ample acidity. It is harmonious and opulent with a mouthwatering finish.
