The vineyards of New York’s Finger Lakes are proving to be a great source of high quality Rieslings. The 2023 Hermann J. Wiemer Semi-Dry Riesling is a world-class rendition of this great grape variety. It makes a striking impression with its fruit intensity and shows the beautiful complexity and racy appeal of the world’s best Rieslings. The grapes are drawn from selected vineyards around Seneca Lake and benefits from the moderating climatic influence of the deep lake. The aromas of the 2023 bottling are bright and forward, with lovely scents of flowers, lemon, pear and pineapple fruits enhanced by nuances of allspice and honey. The flavors are pure, layered and complex with the citrus, pear and tropical fruits followed by honey and spice tones. It is perfectly balanced, with a vivid and racy style. With its ripeness, intensity of fruit and electric acidity, it is reminiscent of a Riesling from Germany’s Mosel Valley. It is an outstanding example of Finger Lakes quality at a fantastic price and is well worth seeking out.
