Juhfark is a little-known Hungarian grape variety grown only in Somló. Juhfark translates to “sheep’s tail,” a term coined on account of to the cluster’s cylindrical shape resembling a sheep’s tail. The Kolonics 100 percent Juhfark is aged in the “Nimród” barrel, a 1,060-liter, new Hungarian oak cask. It is intensely concentrated with bright acidity, a taste of white peach, toasted almond, wet stones, and a long, mineral finish. A quick note for when we can travel again, the importer, Tasting Table Budapest, has a charming tasting room in Budapest should you be looking for a crash course on Hungarian wines. It was a highlight of a trip to Budapest in 2017.
