Alsace, located in northeastern France, is best known for Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc wines. Alsace is also noted for having a wildly complex range of soil types. That is part of the reason for so many grape varieties – when the soil changes, the optimum grape variety for that spot changes as well. Historically, Alsace producers created blends of wines from the various grapes they grew. Edelzwicker or “noble blend” was a common term to describe a blend. Modern trends led marketers away from blending to focus on single varieties. A few producers, however, have proudly maintained the blending tradition and some of those wines are coming back into favor. The 2023 Kuentz-Bas Alsace Blanc honors the blending tradition in delicious fashion. Comprised of six grape varieties with Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner enhanced by Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat, it combines enchanting aromatics with easy drinkability. To be precise, the blend is Pinot Blanc (40%), Sylvaner (25%), Riesling (10%), Pinot Gris (10%) Gewurztraminer (10%) and Muscat (5%). It is a delicious, layered, elegant and dry blend. The bouquet is forward with floral and spice elements interwoven with lemon, yellow plum, pear and tropical fruit scents. The layers of ripe peach, pear, citrus and tropical fruit flavors unfold across the palate followed by attractive floral and spice nuances and a clean, dry finish. This is a benchmark Alsace blend that exemplifies Alsace vinous history.
