I like the way this wine leans into its gooseberry fruit notes in an unapologetic way, letting the notes of lemongrass and grapefruit sit subtly by in the background. The finish is rich and lingering, and for all the wine’s initial power, it’s quite elegant in the end. New Zealand is exploring a broader range of stylistic possibilities with this variety from this region now that the craze has subsided, and it’s a good thing.
