Vega Sicilia, the iconic winery in Spain’s Ribera del Duero, acquired Oremus, the iconic winery, in the Tokaji region of Hungary in 1993. The Furmint grape is famous for its starring role in Hungary’s sweet wines, Tokaji aszu, made from grapes that have been infected with the botrytis cinerea fungus that dries the grapes, concentrating their flavors and sweetness and contributing flavors such as honey, caramel or toffee. But Furmint can make excellent, crisp, dry wines like this one from the Mandolás vineyard. It is fresh, lively and delicious with aromas and flavors of Granny Smith apple, pear, Meyer lemon and hints of grapefruit zest and creamy roundness in the mouth. Enjoy it as an aperitif or with ceviche, fried calamari, or raw oysters.
