A surprisingly elegant and complex wine for such a relatively low price, this pleasingly dry table wine is made from the traditional Port wine grapes (Tinto Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Franca) of the Douro region. Once you know that, you may be able to detect hints of the floral, spicy, plummy fruit character often associated with those powerful sweet wines. Assobio, however, is bone dry, with balanced tannins plus plenty of verve and youth. Because it is so nicely calibrated this is a red wine that goes with all kinds of food, from duck, to pork to burgers.
