English sparkling wines are quickly rising to become serious contenders to Champagne — and one of the ambitious producers helping to set the stage is Rathfinny Wine Estate. Founded in 2010 by Mark and Sarah Driver, Rathfinny planted its first vineyards in April 2012 and has since become a standout in the UK’s sparkling wine scene. The house-style 2019 Classic Cuvée, a blend of 44% Pinot Noir, 41% Chardonnay, and 15% Pinot Meunier, is razor-sharp and crystalline, with fantastic depth of red fruit. It’s a great representation of the work the UK is doing on rustic sparkling styles. Aperitif-leaning yet not without charm and presence, it finishes with a mouth-watering lift.
