The first winery established in Baja, Santo Tomas is one of the largest and most reliable today. While combining Tempranillo and Cabernet is fairly common in the region, this 2020 struck me as an outstanding example. A 50-50 blend, it was aged in small oak for 12 months. Strange as it may sound, it has the aromatics of Tempranillo and the flavors and structure of Cabernet. But with aeration, it all comes together as a multi-layered medium-bodied wine with subtle complexity. Some anise, leather and cherry aromas lead to a nicely balanced palate with a flavor mix of black cherry, tobacco and dried herbs. Light tannins and a touch of oak add to the pleasing finish.
