Meritage wines, a portmanteau term conjoining “Merit” and “Heritage,” are the U.S. answer to Bordeaux blends. Stinson Vineyards’ 2021 Meritage sees 18 months in 30% new French oak, giving the wine spiciness and depth. The fruit (50% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc, 20% Petit Verdot, 7% Cabernet Franc) is just starting to show its age, displaying both fresh and dried fruit notes on the palate. I would pair this Meritage with either smoked chicken wings or a classic cheeseburger.
