Petite Sirah was most likely a natural crossing of Syrah and Peloursin grapes that occurred in Professor Durif’s nursery vineyard in southern France in the 1880’s. Known as Durif in France and largely ignored, it became quite popular as Petite Sirah in California. As a wine, It is usually a deeply colored, robust and often somewhat rustic in style. Stone Cottage Cellars in Colorado has released a lovely, more refined rendition of Petite Sirah from grapes grown in Colorado’s Grand Valley AVA. Deep ruby in color, the 2022 Petite Sirah shows ripe blackberry and blackcurrant fruit at the nose with subtle floral, herbal and black pepper spice hints. While it is plush and rich on the palate, it is more lifted and elegant than most California Petite Sirah wines. It shows layers of blackberry and blackcurrant fruits interwoven with herb and spice elements. It is a deliciously different Colorado take on a classic California grape variety.
