Gemischter Satz is traditional wine from vineyards grown on opposite sides of the Danube River in Vienna. These vineyards include multiple grape varieties grown, harvested, and fermented together, which is called a field blend. This style of wine is a popular house wine in Vienna’s wine taverns called Heuriger. You might imagine that different grape varieties don’t grow and ripen at the same time, so when the grapes are harvested some will be overripe, some not quite ripe and others perfectly ripe, offering a range of flavors. This wine from Wieninger is a fresh and lively displaying pale, bright yellow color with aromas and flavors of lemon zest, green apples, ripe melon mingling with notes of dusty minerals. Gemischter Satz has become an official Austrian appellation, due in part to the efforts of winery owner Fritz Wieninger.
