On the weekend of September 26-27 we assembled our team of judges -- 11 sommeliers from top restaurants with extraordinary wine programs -- to evaluate wines entered in the debut vintage of the Sommelier Challenge International Wine Competition. The wines entered in this first Sommelier Challenge were an impressive bunch, and 49 made it to the final round of voting for best of show in five broad categories -- sparkling, red, white, rose and fortified. All wines put forward by the judges for the best-of-show vote were elevated from gold to platinum. At least two sommeliers evaluated each wine entry, and the awarding judge is noted along with each winning wine.
