The beginning is subtle with citrus mineral aromas, then opens on the palate with round apple, citrus flavors.  Critics Gold 2001 Gran Reserva Rioja $27.00: Very complex and interesting, this is probably close to its optimal point of maturity, and yet it still shows fresh primary fruit under an elaborate canopy of toasty, spicy, leafy, meaty accents.  Very well made, this shows the complexity and completeness of traditional Rioja wines, but without seeming overly tired or dried by time in wood. – Michael Franz
