La Mejorada, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León (Spain) 2008

By

La Mejorada has recovered the remains of a famous monastery and replanted vineyards on the land.  This 100% Tempranillo wine derives from moisture-retaining sandy loam soils near the property’s water mills.  The wine is a vivid ruby color.  The nose has a complex collection of ripe cherry, plum, and tart blueberry fruit, roasted meat, black pepper, violets, and sweet herbs.  These characteristics follow through the palate.  The wine is full, rich, and ripe with a pleasing combination of refreshing acidity and resolved tannins that combine for a velvety texture.  The finish is long and flavorful.  The wine opens in the glass and continues to show additional layers over time.  This wine is delicious now, but will benefit from a few years of age.
