G. D. Vajra, Langhe Rosso (Piedmont, Italy) 2008

By Paul Lukacs

It’s hard to imagine a better value in Italian wine than this delicious Langhe blend from a producer located in the heart of Barolo.  The wine does not offer the firm tannic structure characteristic of Barolos, so surely does not have their aging potential.  Yet for a distinctive-tasting, classy Piedmontese red that can be enjoyed right now, you can hardly do better.  You will find a violet-tinged perfume, deep fruit flavors, echoes of spice, leather, and earth, and a seductively long finish.  All for less than $20.  Wow!
