DonnaChiara, Irpinia (Campania, Italy) 2008

Jan 19, 2012

By Michael Apstein

With this DOC Irpinia, DonnaChiara reminds us of the importance of place.  Irpinia and Aglianico is a good marriage because the locale imbues the wine with an intriguing tarry quality and earthiness that complements the black cherry notes.  Polished tannins add structure without a trace of harshness while lip-smacking acidity keeps it fresh.  A step up from their IGT Aglianico, this one unfolds over the course of a meal revealing spice and other non-fruity nuances.
