Ernesto Catena, Mendoza (Argentina) Malbec 2009

May 14, 2013

By Marguerite Thomas

A uniquely elegant and complex Malbec, with glorious floral and subtle smoky aromas, this wine has both the lightness and denseness of a cumulous cloud. If you like a narrative to go with the wine you drink, the back label on this bottle tells us that “Siesta” is named for the ancient tradition of the Incas in the Tahuantinsuyu region who buried offerings to the land so that it would remain healthy and fertile. Inspired by this ritual, every year a few of the best bottles of Ernesto Catena wines are buried in the vineyard in hopes that their “siesta” will protect the region’s wines, people and harvest. I’ll drink to that.
