Fratelli Brovia, Barolo (Piedmont, Italy) 2009

A pretty nose of sweet herbs, soft old leather, ripe cherry and raspberry is a wonderful introduction to this wine.  The palate has earthy clay, mushroom, and  black tea notes.  The entry is soft and sweet but firms up and dries out at the end.  An astringent streak runs through the finish.  The tannins are dusty but elegant, lending balance to the fruit.  This wine is from the “young vines” of four Crus owned by the estate.  These young vines are between 15 and 30 years old, which explains the complexity of this wine.  This is an accessible and delicious Barolo for a reasonable price.
