Penfolds, South Australia (Australia) 2008

What I love about this wine is that is so well built and so well integrated at such a young age, but it certainly has enough of everything to make it one of the world’s top new releases for the cellar.  The price puts it out of almost everyone’s reach, but if there’s a wine at this price level that is worth the money, this is it.  The wine’s color is incredibly dark and opaque…essentially black.  The aromas show awesome power, yet the bouquet is full of breed and class, with scents of bold berries, dried fruit, sweet earth.  Full-bodied on the palate, this is packed with flavor and almost endless energy.  It shows outstanding flavors of wild cassis, berries and dried earth, with every-present oak lurking in the background but not shortening the phenomenally long finish.  Vineyard regions:  Barossa Valley, Clare Valley and Magill Estate.  One of the greatest young wines in my tasting memory. Best Served: 2023-2033.
