Truchard, Carneros (Napa Valley, California) Pinot Noir 2012

May 14, 2014

By Michael Apstein

Since the 1940s when Louis M. Martini planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the Stanly Ranch in Carneros, California growers have been enthralled by those varieties in that locale.  Indeed, Carneros is the only AVA to be defined by geographic parameters instead of political ones.  The Truchard family has been buying vineyards in Carneros for decades and now owns roughly 400 acres, which means that all of their wines come from their vineyards.  Their 2012 Pinot Noir is particularly noteworthy for its combination of sweet fruitiness and spice.  Reflective of the cool climate of Carneros, it’s ripe and balanced, not overdone.  Silky tannins allow you to enjoy it now.
