Bodega Garzón, Uruguay (Uruguay) Tannat 2012

Jun 10, 2015

By Michael Apstein

I was expecting a dark, inky robust wine from this Tannat, the grape whose traditional home is Madiran in Southwest France.  What I didn’t expect was the elegance and silky tannins.  (Silky is not a word ever used to describe the wines from Madiran).  While robust and concentrated, this Tannat is actually well proportioned.  Just as Malbec is the signature red grape of Argentina, Uruguay’s wine industry holds a similar relation to Tannat, which they believe they take to greater heights than any other country.   Judging from this example, they may well be correct.
