Tenuta Delle Terre Nere, Etna Rosso DOC (Sicily, Italy) 2008

The cooler climate of the high-altitude, single vineyard used for this wine rebuts the notion of Sicilian wines being super-ripe, bold, and hot.  A beautiful medium ruby color is indicative of its Burgundian style.  While the predominant grape is the little-known Nerello Mascalese, lovers of Pinot Noir or Grenache should consider this new option since the style is similar to both.  Attractive herbal red currants, sour cherry, and plum skin fruit notes are layered with aromatic violet, earthy leather, rosemary, coffee, and a crystalline mineral finish.  The wine is medium bodied, has refreshing almost tangy acidity, and a dusty, drying tannic core.  This is a well-made, complex wine, if a bit austere at first.  A perfect match with lamb or other meats now, or has all the components to age.
