Domaine Gros Frère et Soeur, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (Burgundy, France) 2009

This wine derives from a 1.5 hectare parcel at the top of Clos Vougeot; a monopole opposite Musigny, hence the right to carry the additional descriptor. The sloped upper section of Clos Vougeot is considered the best, and the 2009 vintage produced notoriously rich and opulent wines. This wine shows the combination of inherent potential and realized ripeness. The nose has an almost-Rhône character of high-toned violet and meaty notes. Added to this is a roasted beet, earthy aspect, making the nose compelling. The palate follows with concentrated ripe berry flavors, gripping structure of both tannin and acidity, and a texture that caresses. This is a huge, but well-made wine. The intense new oak treatment nears the point of distraction, but stops just short of the line. The finish is long, smoky, and memorable. This wine is delicious and immediately accessible.
