De Forville, Barbaresco DOCG (Piedmont, Italy) 2017

Nov 29, 2020

By Rebecca Murphy

This is a traditional style Barbaresco at a great price.  Brilliant garnet color and red cherry aromas with a whisper of dried rose petals and woody herbs.  Generous cherry, raspberry fruit mingles with notes of violets, dried roses, citrus zest and sandalwood seamlessly integrated with vibrant acidity and fine-grained tannins.  It will pair well with Osso Bucco or a lamb roast.  The first member of the Belgian De Forville family to settle in Barbaresco in 1860 fell under the spell of Nebbiolo.  Fortunately for us it is a spell that continues today with fifth generation family members Valter and Paolo Anfosso.  They have Nebbiolo vines in prized vineyard areas of Rabaja, Loreto and Pozzo.  It is a traditional style Barbaresco fermented on the skins for as long as 4 weeks.  At the end of November, the wines are racked into large oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and aging for three years, and is then bottled without filtration.
