Allegrini, Valpolicella DOC (Veneto, Italy) 2013

Dec 12, 2014

By Robert Whitley

Valpolicella has a long and sometimes not so distinguished history. For many years following World War II the emphasis was on volume rather than quality, and examples of thin, acidic, bland Valpolicella were the rule rather than the exception. Allegrini was one of the first producers in the Veneto to embrace modernity and work on improving Valpolicella’s image. Vintages such as this luscious 2013 Valpolicella are now the rule. It exhibits good ripeness, with aromas of black cherry and savory herbs. The acid-sugar-tannin balance is outstanding. And with savory sauces and grilled meats, this Valpolicella morphs into a classic within its genre.
