Ruffino, Toscana IGT (Italy) 2011

Sep 26, 2014

By Robert Whitley

Few would argue against the proposition that Tuscany is the world’s finest terroir for Sangiovese. The steep Tuscan hills and warm summers also provide a hospitable environment for Merlot (in particular) and Cabernet Sauvignon. Ruffino’s Modus is a blend of those three grapes and, while it has always been a fine wine, the 2011 vintage is a stunner. Full-bodied and richly structured, it’s a Tuscan red that will reward those with the patience to lay it down in the cellar for a decade or more. Aromas of black cherry, blackberry and plum dominate, the tannins are beautifully integrated, and the balance is exquisite. Awarded a platinum medal at the 2014 Sommelier Challenge International Wine Competition.
