Berger, Niederösterreich (Austria) Grüner Veltliner 2018

Aug 27, 2019

By Wayne Belding

Erich Berger makes some of the best-buy quality Grüner Veltliners in the market.  His family winery in Kremstal offers a range of wines but is best known for this 1-Liter Grüner Veltliner.  Although a Niederösterreich (Lower Austria) appellation, much of the fruit comes from Berger’s Kremstal vineyards and grows in deep loess soil.  The Berger 2018 Grüner Veltliner compares with $25 Grüners.  It is juicy, fresh and bursting with floral aromas plus lemon, lime and green apple fruits backed by subtle green herb and white pepper tones – the signature characteristics of good Grüner.  The flavors are brisk and refreshing, but with a satisfying textural richness on the palate typical of loess-grown Grüners. Grüner Veltliner is a versatile wine to pair with vegetable dishes.  Its inherent green tones give it an advantage over many other whites.  It can pair equally well with your favorite fresh seafood recipes.
