Bava, Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG (Piedmont, Italy) Ruchè 2022

Ruchè was almost extinct 50 years ago but has seen a resurgence in the Piedmont region, thanks to winemaking priests at Castagnole Monferrato who rediscovered the grape and began using it in their production.  Ruchè produces a great wine with excellent acidity and supporting tannins.  Tart raspberry and pomegranates are immediately apparent but the wine is also floral with hibiscus and geranium notes.  I also found a suggestion of red apple skins interweaving between all of the already interesting notes, making for a truly unique and memorable flavor profile.  In 2010, Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato received DOCG status and it is easy to see why after enjoying a glass.
