Pico Island in the Atlantic Ocean, part of Portugal, has produced wine for centuries.  The volcanic island is comprised entirely of black basalt and is a classified UNESCO World Heritage Site, and produces wines well worth discovering.  One wine demonstrating this is the Azores Wine Company’s 50/50 blend of the native grapes Arinto and Verdelho.  The wine has an alluring bouquet of pineapple and passionfruit that gives way to a lip-smacking impression of saltiness on the finish.  The beautiful balance makes this an easy wine to love.
