I am seeing something of a trend in New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc – one that is pulling back on bombastic, overt grapefruit character for a more nuanced style. This is a fine example of that trend. All the regional components are here, but none dominate the conversation. It’s showing aromas and flavors of grapefruit, gooseberry, lemongrass and stony minerality, and they lead to a long, mixed citrus finish. A little neutral oak hones the acidic edge just a touch, leaving all the deliciousness intact.
