Conde D’ Ervideira, Alentejo (Portugal) 2019

Dec 20, 2022

By Miranda Franco

Conde D’ Ervideira Vinho da Água, produced with a blend of Aragonêz, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, and Tinta Caiada, is an elegant, highly aromatic wine.  Notably, the wine was bottled and submerged in the waters of the Alqueva lake in Alentejo, where it matured for eight months.  Aging wines under seawater has been experimented with in small ways since the middle of the 19th century, but Ervideira is perhaps the first winery in the world to age wine in lake water.  What results is a complex yet lean wine with notes of ripe black fruits, floral nuances, and balsamic, framed by bright minerality and vibrant acidity.
