Most consumers think of Barolo and Barbaresco when Piedmont is mentioned. There are many more wines made in this storied region and this is one of them. The Ferrando estate is located at the northern border of Piedmont, just before one crosses into Valle d’Aosta. They are noted for their Carema, a red from the Nebbiolo grape, but their excellent Erbaluce is even more rare. The Erbaluce di Caluso appellation received DOCG status in 2010 and, with only a few hundred acres planted, remains one of the smallest DOCGs in Italy. The 2022 Ferrando Erbaluce di Caluso is a beautiful and fresh example. it has a bouquet of wildflowers, lemon, peach, herbs and a touch of spice. The flavors are pure and juicy, with lemon, green apple and peach fruits enhanced by the floral and herbal elements. It’s a delicious and versatile treat.
