The Turtles Vineyard is a reference to the nesting grounds of a local turtle species that adjoins the vines here at a 2000-foot elevation in northern Greece. The Malagouzia grape was rescued from near extinction in the 1970s and is now re-established in the vineyards of northern Greece. Florina is a higher elevation growing region in Macedonia; and Alpha Estate is a top producer here. Malagouzia is an aromatic white grape that is reminiscent of Viognier, Albariño or dry Muscat wines. Alpha Estate vinifies with a pre-fermentation cold soak and extended lees aging – procedures that enhance the complexity of the finished wine. The 2023 Alpha Estate Malagouzia has an expressive bouquet of peach, pear and tropical fruits enhanced by floral, herb and citrus peel hints. The flavors are exotic and appealing with the luscious peach and tropical fruits backed by delicate floral, herb, and citrus peel tones. The citrusy lift at the finish makes it a deliciously intriguing and refreshing white.
