Alain Graillot, Zenata (Morocco) Syrah 2017

By Miranda Franco

You might be unfamiliar with Moroccan wine, but Morocco has a vast winemaking history.  Morocco used to be one of the largest wine-producing countries in the world.  The French made a significant impact in the wine industry during this time up until they relinquished control of Morocco in 1956.  Now, although still primarily an Islamic culture, the wine is flourishing quietly throughout approximately 30,000 acres of vineyards.  Accordingly, Alain Graillot, best known for his Northern Rhône wines, is showcasing Morocco’s potential in his 100 percent Syrah.  The resulting wine offers ample black fruits and dried red cherry followed by sandalwood, herbs, and spice hints.  The finish is like classic Syrah with a dry and lingering finish.
