Badenhorst, Coastal Region (South Africa) 2010

The slightly confected red and blue fruits, tobacco and herbs, brown spices and white pepper that are suggested by this wine are all reminiscent of Rhône Valley or Languedoc red wines, which reflects well upon this tasty South African red.  The violet floral notes and peppercorn character, combined with ripe raspberry, blackberry, and dark plum, give an indication of the heavy dose of Syrah in this blend.  The wine has medium-full body, drying tannins, and enough acid to keep the blend lively and interesting.   The wine achieves all of this without the extra layers of new oak used in most wines of its type.  This is fermented in concrete and aged in old casks and concrete, perhaps contributing to its smooth, pleasing texture.
