Bodegas Montecillo, Rioja Reserva (Spain) 2014

Oct 18, 2022

By Michael Apstein

Bodegas Montecillo, one of Rioja’s most prominent producers, consistently offers great value.  Take this Reserva for example.  A blend of Tempranillo (90 percent), Garnacha (8 percent) and Mazuelo, it spends two years aging in oak barrels followed by another 18 months in the bottle before release, which explains why the 2014 is the current release.  The aging also explains the wine’s suave texture, which perfectly complements a combination of bright red and dark fruit character.  This fresh and lively Rioja has just the right amount of savory spiciness from the oak that balances its fruitiness.  It would be a good choice for grilled meats.  And check out the price!
