If you are not picking up a bottle of wine because it says Touriga Nacional, Baga, or another native Portuguese grape name you are not familiar with, you are making a big mistake as Portugal offers affordable diamonds in the rough. Tinto Casa de Mouraz is a case in point. The Mouraz is a blend of indigenous Dão varietals — Tinta-Roriz, Touriga-Nacional, Jaen, Alfrocheiro, Baga, Alvarelhão, Água-Santa and others — from the first biodynamic vineyard in Portugal. This full-bodied, rich and concentrated gem is fruit-driven with ample flavors of cherry, currant, blackberry, anise, with a lovely herbal backbone followed by a long and powerful finish. This is a perfect food wine.
