Purchased in 1998 by Hubert de Boüard of Chateau Angelus, La Fleur has 29 hectares in Lalande de Pomerol planted to Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet. “Le Lion” is the second label made from young vines and has been offered since 2011. This 2020 is a dark garnet and its aroma is quite assertive with ripe cherry and olives along with a pronounced red pepper note. Medium-bodied and firm on the palate, it delivers attractive, upfront black fruit flavors. With smooth velvety tannins, it is well-balanced and finishes long. A good value, it can be enjoyed now but I suspect a few years in the cellar would lead to even more pleasant surprises. The property has also recently been transformed into a tourist attraction, something badly needed in this overlooked appellation.
