Clayhouse, Paso Robles (California) Syrah-Petite Sirah-Viognier 2012

Dec 22, 2014

By Robert Whitley

This Clayhouse Rhone-style blend is both delicious and interesting. Delicious because it delivers aromas of ripe black fruits, layers of complex flavor and a hint of licorce. It is yummy to the core. Interesting because the inclusion of viognier in the blend seems like window dressing. Viogner, a white wine, is often added in the northern Rhone appellation of Cote Rotie to soften the tannins of the otherwise 100 percent syrah. But the Clayhouse blend shows ripe, supple tannins that I doubt needed softening. Regardless, it’s a beautiful blend and sure to please.
