The label notes this wine was “Brought into being by Vailia From,” the owner and winemaker. Described by some as a “rebel winemaker” and “free spirit” she is definitely unconventional, but also wonderfully creative. Her 2021 Soothsayer is a blend of 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Tempranillo, 15% Barbera, 10% Sangiovese, 10% Alicante Bouschet and 10% Cabernet Franc matured for 21 months in about one-third new French oak. In the glass it sure looks like Cabernet, and the ripe aromatic melange of black currant, plums and a hint of meat/mushroom is every bit as attractive as a “culty” Napa Cabernet. But this wine turns out to be delightfully distinctive. On the palate, this medium- to full-bodied wine is polished and savory with ripe juicy berry flavors that expand to display touches of cocoa, oak spice and licorice which then lead to a subtle hint of chocolate in the long finish. Overall, an example of truly creative winemaking.
